Why Heat Pumps in Squamish?

Why You Need Heat Pumps in Squamish?

Living in Squamish means balancing damp winters, cool mornings, and mild but humid summers.

Older furnaces or baseboard heaters often can’t keep up — they leave cold spots in your home, drive up utility bills, and waste energy that doesn’t need to be wasted. It’s not just uncomfortable — it’s expensive and unsustainable.

As Squamish works toward cleaner energy and carbon-neutral homes, inefficient heating systems are becoming a thing of the past.

At Align Climate Solutions, we help homeowners switch to modern heat pump systems built for the Sea-to-Sky region.

A heat pump doesn’t burn fuel — it moves heat.

In winter, it draws warmth from the outdoor air and brings it inside. In summer, it reverses to cool your space.

The Result:
Steady comfort, lower costs, and a smaller environmental footprint.

The Benefits:

  • Lower energy bills thanks to high efficiency
  • Year-round comfort (both heating & cooling)
  • Quiet operation and clean performance
  • Potential eligibility for rebates and incentives

If you’re replacing an aging furnace, adding air-conditioning, or planning a full retrofit — we’ll help you choose a system that fits your home and your budget.

Heat Pump Types

Types of Heat Pumps We Work With

Newly installed high-efficiency furnace system in a Squamish home, part of Align Climate Solutions’ professional furnace installation and replacement services.

Air-Source (Ducted)

This is the most common type of heat pump system used across homes in Squamish.

It uses the outdoor air as the source of heat. The system is easier to install, works well in moderate climates and delivers efficient performance.

The only drawback — it works in homes that already have ductwork or can accommodate it.

If you are in a condo or townhouse and you do not have the ducting already, then this might not be the right solution.

But if you do, that is a no-brainer.

Ductless / Mini-Split Systems

For homes without ductwork, especially the older ones, or for focused zones like basements, additions, hot/cold spot areas, a ductless heat pump is a great choice.

These systems have an outdoor unit connected to one or more indoor wall- or ceiling-mounted air handlers.

In addition to flexible installation and high efficiency, the other prime benefits are zone control and lower disruption.

Ground-Source (Geothermal) & Water-Source

These systems basically extract heat from the earth or water rather than air.

Because the ground usually remains at a more constant temperature year-round, these systems can achieve very high efficiencies.

Having said that, it has its own set of challenges. The main challenge with this one is that the installation is more complex and costlier upfront.

We can help you assess if your site qualifies and whether the long-term savings make sense for you.

Hybrid / Dual-Fuel Systems

In some cases, more in extreme climates, at times, it makes more sense to combine a heat pump with another energy source (e.g., gas or oil boiler, or switching between systems depending on outdoor temperature) to optimize performance.

Being in Squamish, we do not usually have such extreme climates as in some interior places in the North.

So this system is not much in use, but it is always better to review and see if it could be helpful for your house.

FAQs

Got Questions?
We’re Here to Help

For any questions or enquiry feel free to Call us or Schedule an appointment.

Will a heat pump work in a cold climate like ours?

Yes. Modern cold-climate heat pumps are designed to extract heat even at lower outdoor temperatures. The key is proper sizing, good installation, and ensuring your home is well-insulated.

Do I need ductwork for a heat pump?

Not always. If your home has existing ductwork you may choose a ducted air-source system. If not, a ductless (mini-split) system is a viable alternative. We’ll assess your situation.

How long will a heat pump last?

With proper maintenance and installation, a quality heat pump should last 15-20 years (or more) depending on use and conditions.

What rebates or incentives are available?

Several. We’ll help you determine which programs apply (for example through FortisBC, CleanBC, etc.) and assist with the application process

How disruptive is the installation?

It depends on system type and home layout. Ductless systems can often be installed in just a day, while full ducted replacements may take 2-5 days.
