Do I need strata approval for a heat pump or AC in a condo/townhome in Whistler?
We always suggest checking and following your strata’s bylaws and obtaining the necessary permissions before proceeding with the installation.
Where should the outdoor unit go in snowy conditions?
We typically suggest that the outdoor unit of a heat pump should be placed in a location with sufficient clearance from snow, ideally allowing for a couple of feet of space on all sides to ensure proper airflow and efficiency.
To achieve this in Whistler’s snowy winter conditions, we look for specific “safe zones” around the property, such as:
- The Gable End: Placing the unit on the side of the house where the roof peaks, rather than under the eaves, to avoid “roof-alanches” or heavy snow shedding.
- The Elevated Wall: Using heavy-duty wall brackets to keep the unit high above the natural snow line and ground-level ice buildup.
- The Protected Under-Deck: Utilizing the space under a high-clearance deck to act as a natural umbrella against direct snowfall.
- The High-Stand Island: Positioning the unit on an 18-inch stand away from the driveway, snow-piles, or areas where you typically bank snow while shovelling.
This strategic positioning helps prevent snow accumulation and allows the unit to operate effectively even during the heaviest winter cycles.
Will a cold-climate heat pump still work during Whistler cold snaps?
Yes, cold-climate heat pumps are designed to operate in extreme cold, with some models functioning well at temperatures as low as -20°C.
Proper installation and maintenance are key to ensuring they perform effectively during cold snaps in places like Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton.
Can you reuse existing ductwork in older Whistler homes?
Sometimes you can reuse existing ductwork in older Whistler homes, but it depends on whether the ducts are the right size, airtight, clean, and compliant with current codes.
With a thorough assessment, we can recommend the best-suited modern HVAC systems for your home and lifestyle.
How often should my system be serviced in a high-use vacation rental in Whistler?
We always recommend servicing your HVAC system at least once or twice a year to ensure optimal performance and address wear and tear from frequent use.
More frequent servicing is recommended for homes that allow for pets. Pet fur and dander can clog filters, reducing system efficiency.
