What is a Mini-split System?
There are two types of mini split systems, ductless mini-split heat pumps, and ducted mini-split heat pumps. These highly efficient heating & cooling systems are fast becoming the go-to type of heating and cooling system on the West Coast for homes & businesses. They are made up of indoor air handling units that are connected to outdoor units by way of 2 concealed small diameter copper tubing lines and a communication wire.
Ductless Split systems
Ductless mini split units can be the best solution for home/business heating retrofits, add-ons, renovations, and new construction. When extending or installing new duct systems is overly complicated or not practical, ductless units provide an ideal solution. Temperature control of the indoor units can be provided by through the use of a remote control or a smart phone App.
ducted Systems
Ducted mini split systems can be the best solution for home/business where there is space to conceal the indoor unit. Once the concealed unit is suspended in place, duct work can be installed to serve one or several grilles through out the space. Control of ducted systems can be provided by though the use of a touch screen wall control or a smart phone App.
The Gist of it.
The components of outdoor units are the same style for either ducted or ductless systems, however, the indoor units differ. There are now many modern styles of indoor units (wall mount, floor mount, ceiling mount, concealed ducted, and more) for homeowners & business owners to choose from.
The indoor air handling unit(s) has a whisper quiet fan that will discharge either hot or cold air, and the outdoor unit houses a super quiet variable speed compressor and fan. We can connect anywhere from 1 to 14 indoor units to a single outdoor unit making these systems very flexible. This means a home or business can satisfy up to 14 zones with their own individual temperature control! Because these systems utilize energy created from changing the state of refrigerant at various places through out the system, the technology allows heat to be created even when its -15’C to -20’C outside, making them ideal for the Pacific Northwest climate.
Mini split systems are a fantastic option compared to baseboard heat, electric furnace, or propane/oil, if you are looking to reduce the cost of your heating bills. They also provide the added ability to cool spaces in the summer. Given the current rebates offered in British Columbia by BC Hydro & FortisBC, ductless & ducted mini split systems really stand out among the competition!
